In his illustrious career as a US Navy Admiral, William McRaven achieved remarkable feats, including leading the mission against Osama Bin Laden, capturing Saddam Hussein, and rescuing Captain Richard Phillips. His journey, marked by courage, honesty, determination, and leadership, has been nothing short of extraordinary. Yet, amidst these monumental accomplishments, he attributes a significant part of his success to a surprisingly simple daily habit he adopted during his Navy Seal training.
In his influential book "Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life and Maybe the World," Admiral McRaven shares this habit: making his bed every morning. During a commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin, which garnered over eleven million views by September 2020, he explained the profound impact of this small act. He said, "If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It gives you a small sense of pride and encourages you to complete another task, and then another. By day's end, that single completed task will have multiplied into many tasks completed." While it may sound trivial, this habit is more than just about tidiness. It's a lesson in how small, positive habits can cascade into greater control over the aspects of life that bring us happiness. Additionally, it helps reduce decision fatigue by eliminating one more choice from our daily lives. This notion of finding joy and accomplishment in the small, everyday things aligns with the philosophy behind my upcoming book, "Happiness: The 40% Solution." Slated for release early in the new year, this book delves into how we can harness simple practices to significantly enhance our happiness. Stay tuned for more updates on its progress and get ready to explore the little changes that can make a big difference in your life.
